[google-talk-open] moved away from google apps jabber server, now presence is broken

I've moved to my own instance of jabberd (from the google apps chat
service) and now gmail users always see my accounts as offline or
unavailable.    I've disabled the chat service from the administrative
page, and I've got the appropriate DNS settings.  Any clues?
