The Themes API Developer's Guide specifies: "You can make the [header] image as wide as you like, as long as the file size stays under 40 kb".
I've noticed that many thumbnails in the iGoogle themes directory seem to load very slowly, and wondered what the file sizes of the header images really are. I found that many high quality themes accepted by Google include header images with file sizes well above the 40 kb requirement, in some cases as large as 300 kb. As a themes developer who has tried to stay within the API requirements, I've refrained from using some of my high quality images in themes because I couldn't get the file sizes below the required 40 kb without unacceptable degradation of the images, and the full size files take noticably longer to load. But I suppose the 40 kb limit doesn't really make sense when you're designing themes for wide screens 1680 px and above? Can we take it, then, in view of Google's acceptance of header images well above the 40 kb file size requirement, that there is really NO Google-imposed limit for the size of header image files, in spite of what the Developer's Guide says?
