You probably won't be able to find a lot of photographs suitable for use as a theme without further processing them yourself. Simple processing can be done in Windows Paint, more complicated processing in Adobe Photoshop or the free alternative, The GIMP.
Most of the photos I use in my themes are panoramas I have taken during my travels. One or two, however, I have cropped where I've seen the potential of a strip across a larger photo of a different aspect ratio. I think it's all how you view the photo. You don't necessarily have to show the whole of something for it to be recognizable — as long as the photo includes some distinguishing feature(s). For instance, my grandson had a photo of an old Lockheed Super Constellation aircraft which he wanted to use as a theme. He rotated and cropped the photo so that all you could see was the nose/cockpit on one side, and a wingtip and fuel tank on the other side, with blue sky in the centre. But there was no doubt about the subject of the theme! A good source of free high quality photographs is http://www.morguefile.com . Don't be tempted to grab photos from Flickr or Picasaweb, as you could be infringing copyright. Developing iGoogle themes makes you see photographs with new eyes — e.g. you need to be sure there is space for the iGoogle logo and search box without it being right on top of an important feature! Have a good look through the themes directory and see how the top theme developers approach the challenge. Happy theming!
