This is really not the point. Google (and Kurtzweil) has made some
pretty extravagant claims about Google Translate. There is another
point too Translation is a barometer of AI.
"What is the difference between pouring concrete at 50C and fighting
Israel?".
Google translated "wsT jw AlmErkp or وسط جو المعركة " as "central air
battle". Correct is "the climatic environmental battle" or a more free
translation would be "the battle against climate and environment". It
should be noted that this is Sadat's speech on the completion of the
Aswan High Dam.
Now central to this is the knowledge of how to build a dam. Could AI
assist me in building dams in the future? This is what Google would
like you to believe, but is it true.
There is also the issue of the reputation of Google. I realize that GT
is purely inanimate, but when it comes up with US Troops committing
atrocities in SE Asia and (apparently) bolstering the propaganda of
the Burmese régime, the situation is starting to get more than purely
academic.
