That's interesting, and I wonder what the intermediate language is - I
assume it is French.
By intermediate language, I assume that since there will be many pairs
of languages which have no common texts, say perhaps Irish and
Rumanian, there must be an intermediate language into which a text is
translated from Irish and to Rumanian.
I took the English text (from today's Scotsman newspaper)
"IN THE past year, Scottish artist Peter Howson has told a court he
is incapable of handling his own finances after being admitted to
hospital with "extreme distress", and seen his ex-manager exposed as a
convicted heroin dealer."
and used GT to convert it into Haiti Creole and got
"Nan ane ki sot pase a, Scottish atis Howson Pyè te di li se yon
tribinal enkapab manyen finans li posede apre yo te antre nan lopital
ak "detrès ekstrèm", epi ansyen wè administratè-li kòm yon ekspoze
konsesyonè ewoyin kondane"
However, doing it via French
"L'année dernière, l'artiste écossais Peter Howson a déclaré lors
d'une juridiction, il est incapable de gérer ses propres finances,
après avoir été admis à l'hôpital avec «extrême détresse», et vu son
ancien directeur exposé comme un individu reconnu coupable de
l'héroïne"
and then into Haiti Creole, I got
"Ane pase, Scottish atis Howson an gen Pyè di li se yon tribinal
enkapab jere finans li posede apre yo te antre nan lopital ak "detrès
ekstrèm", e ansyen direktè wè li kòm yon moun yo kondane a motif
ewoyin".
which looks quite a bit different. Perhaps GT doesn't use an
intermediate language, but in that case how does it work ?
It would be nice to know what the Haitians think of the translations.
