Politics. Filipino is what the Philippines government call their
official language. Everyone else says it's really the same as Tagalog,
but it's supposed to be "neutral", so the government doesn't say
that.

"Farsi" has gone out of fashion, academics and politicians in Iran
today prefer "Persian". And the Chinese government doesn't even like
to admit that what they speak in Hong Kong is a different language...

It may be stupid, but they can't please everybody.
