Here is how I made it work:
I am using Firefox with Google toolbar. From time to time translator
stops working. I am not sure what is the reason, but following
scenario will reset the settings and make it work again:
Go to Google toolbar settings, click Tools and then Restore defaults.
Now choose your language and click Save.
