Can't Google Translator be taught to translate proper nouns.. ahem.. properly? A while ago it was really funny, now it's becoming sad, come on, Google, we trust you, is it so difficult? :)
*Isn't it possible to somehow make translation lists of proper nouns which would act as a "higher" rule in translation process?* (let's say scan wikipedia titles - they usually get the titles right - or simply use dictionaries, <I think we could try to coin some ideas up here if we knew where the problem lies>) E.g. English "I love Riga" becomes "Man patinka Vilnius." in Lithuanian which is literally "I like Vilnius" - so we flip from the the capital of Latvia to the capital of Lithuania - yeah, we're neighbours but it's not an excuse. Or "Dovile" (popular Lithuanian female name) was translated to "Andrius" (popular Lithuanian male name, Andrew). I really really want to ask, can YOU, can WE do something about this? I don't think that "Contribute a better translation:" would be a huge help there (i.e. I expect better/more effective, more straight-forward solution) Btw, have anyone tried to find out why is it such a popular problem? It's a wild guess, but can it be that sometimes people adjust names to their culture/country where that language is native while translating texts (I mean those ones which are being scanned by statistical machine)? What should we do? Are you solving the problem and we don't need to bother you about this any more? P.S. I'm really really sorry if you've already had a topic about this. Also, sorry for a long text.
