I also have this problem, also on a German website. I think that the issue may be (in my case) that the site is a forum that supports both English and German. The buttons and header are in English but the contributions are frequently in German. One way around this would be to allow a dropdown of the From language as well as the To language when translating. Translating English to English seems pretty pointless. I use Bing to do the translation at the moment but it is a lot less convenient than the Google translation service (when it works).
