Scientific language is specialised and precise. There is, in general, only one meaning. I feel this is really outside the scope of translation as such. What might be of help is a dictionary of terms which give (in English + other languages sometimes) what abbreviations and technical terms mean.
Sometimes a term requires a little bit of explanation and a bit of Physics. Suppose I were to use the term "Moment of Inertia". What is it? Well it is the "Angular Momentum" of a body rotating at 1 radian per sec. What's that? I need to go into the theory of levers Σmr^2 or use the integral sign if you prefer it. You need to know that formula and the basis for it. Torque = Force * distance. We normally put nuts onto car wheels at 90N/ m or thereabouts. We need to understand leverage to know what N/m means. Could I suggest that you are not being taught Engineering properly? Engineering stars off with concepts like this. Your teachers need to ensure that you thoroughly understand the concepts. You understand torque. You will then be in a position to discuss such things such as whether a bridge will stand up or not. If I walk over a bridge I generate torque. What fees are you paying? If the instruction is bad you are entitled to your money back - in my book. Getting back to translation, there is a case to be made out that some understanding is needed for good translation. I was horrified when in Arabic - English the Stefan Boltzmann law was presented as 4 times the temperature. It should, of course, be the 4th power. In fact there is a case to be made that some for of "understanding" and AI is needed for good translation. - Ian Parker On Oct 18, 4:46 am, Paula wrote: > I am just curious when Google Translate will release support for > Engineering to English translation.
