Josh Estelle: Thanks for your involvement on this!
I posted about this issue on 12/31/10, with some followups and references to prior postings. To sum up, this issue: --occurs for me in current versions of Safari, Firefox, and (less often?) Chrome. --appears to occur more often with longer, but still quite short, amounts of "from" text. Very, very roughly: it does not occur with 4 lines of typical "from" text, and I start to see it at about 25 lines of "from" text. --occurs for me most often with Russian-to-English, but that's what I use most often recently. I did a quick check of French-to-English and saw the same issue in at least one browser, suggesting that it could be language-independent Starting from a "bare" URI -- the URL "http://translate.google.com" with no query string-- as you suggest does seem to be a good work- around. But: in some cases, the bare URI is over-written after a brief pause, presumably by behind-the-scenes scripting. The result is a "complete" URI containing "from" and "to" languages specified in the query string. In such cases, the work-around fails. Possibly connected: occasional cases recently in which the "from" text itself appears in the query string. This may have some connection to the issue occurring more often with longer "from" text. Or not. Generally: I've observed unpredictability in the operation of the translator recently, over a given session, with different (?) variations from day-to-day.
