Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what happened, but things seem to have sorted themselves out, without me having done anything.
I had a friend over who'd just got an Android phone and wanted some tips. Since his phone had no dlownloaded apps yet, I got Translate from the Market and tried it, and found it spoke French translations correctly. I wanted to show him what had gone wrong with mine, but mine was working perfectly too!
