I'm a software developer responsible for an internationalized web site. We will have human translations of the site into several languages, but would like to use the Google Translate widget to provide machine translations for additional languages. On the widget configuration page -- http://translate.google.com/translate_tools -- there is an option to set "Display mode" to Automatic, with the description:
The translation banner will automatically be displayed when the default browser language of the visitor is different from the language of your page. No dropdown will be displayed. I have configured the widget with this option, which we like the best. Now I would like to test it to see how it works. First I installed the Firefox Quick Locale Switcher plugin<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quick-locale-switcher/>and tried accessing the site with a different locale set, but the widget was not displayed. Then I tried using a version of Firefox specifically localized to a different language (downloaded from here<http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html>) and the widget still did not show up. Finally I tried setting my operating system to another language ("Language & Text" preference pane in Mac OS X) and then viewing the site in Safari, whose menus were now displayed in the new language and (more importantly) is now sending an Accept-Language header corresponding to the new language, and the widget STILL did not show up. A friend accessing the site from Israel confirmed that the widget is showing up for him. I know he was using a Hebrew-localized browser, but that's just what I reproduced above and it didn't work for me. Does anyone know how to test the translate widget with display mode set to automatic? Thanks for reading. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "General" group.
