I'm not sure what is wrong here - I don't think the size is the problem. I have some larger pages that translate fine. Perhaps there is some problem in the way you integrated the Google widget, or the HTML has unmatched tags (check <div> and <span> in particular. You may find debugging tools in the browser to be helpful to explore the nesting of HTML tags.
I suggest adding the Translate tool to a very simple web page. Make sure that it translates properly, and then add more content. This may also help you find the problem in your main page.
