I know there are much more Brazil Portuguese speakers in the world and in
the Internet than the European speakers, and that Google Translate uses the
"statistical machine translation" that analyses written documents all over
the Internet to learn how to translate to that language. But since these
two variants of Portuguese are so much different from each other (even more
than British English and American English), why isn't there a way for the
Google computers to learn how to distinguish the two variants?
For example, if you translate the sentence "It's a fact the the suit is
diry" you would get "é um facto que o terno é sujo". This translation is
wrong in every aspect: instead of "é sujo" it should be "está sujo", and
this is a mixture of european Portuguese and Brazil Portuguese. This
sentence does not make sense in Portugal neither in Brazil, because "facto"
is used in Portugal ("fato" in Brazil) and "terno" is used in Brazil
("fato" in Portugal). And this is only one of many other possible cases.
This type of errors not only make it harder for natives of both countries
to get correct translations, as well it misleads foreigners as they think
they're writing correctly, but they're not.
Also, why is there an European Portuguese text-to-voice synthesizer
available only in translate.google.pt while all other Google domains have
the Brazil Portuguese synthesizer? Why can't we have the European voice to
be heard in all the European countries, as it happens with the English and
Spanish voices (in European Google domains, these voices reflect the
accents of Great Britain and Spain, while in American Google domains the
voices reflect the accent of United States and Mexico)? In this case, I
think this is an underrating of the Portuguese culture and the Portuguese
language wich is not limited to Brazil's norms and is also adopted in other
countries like Cape Verde, Mozambique, Angola, East Timor, São Tomé and
Príncipe, Guinea Bissau and the Macao Special Administrative Region, in
China (which, by the way, follow the European norms).
