I've found out that my original point was wrong - Google translate
doesn't overwrite onmouseover events, it inserts a new span tag with a
new onmouseover to pop up the original language version to allow the
user to suggest a better translation.

On menus which are presented using CSS (Cascading Style Sheet)
formatting, the translation tips popups generally display on top of
the menu and make it awkward for the user to navigate.
