In truth, though, the pronunciation of kanji varies depending on
context; most have at least two readings. 山 has "yama", "san", and
"sen", depending on context. If you're trying to find the
pronunciation of a lone kanji, it's worth looking up all the readings.
http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/cgi-bin/wwwjdic.cgi?1B is an
incredible resource for kanji information; make sure to select "Kanji
cut-and-paste" from the drop-down.

And if you are trying to *learn Japanese, definitely become familiar
with kana first.
