Google have fixed the problem (around 17 Jan 2008). They are now not
adding their own <base> tag to the code. My problem was caused by two
<base> tags - my one and one Google Translate was adding before mine.
It appears IE7 and IE8 only read the first tag (Google's) and ignore
others. All other browser only process the last <base> tag. This
resulted in my shop layout being wrecked by IE because it was not
reading my <base> tag.
