How about this workaround. I plan to insert an additional point into the dataset for plotting. The datetime will be the datetime of the annotation and the y value will be a linear interpolation of the nearest actaul data points.
I'll have a note in the annotation that reminds the user that it's not an actual mmeasurement but a placeholder for the marker. I can also refer them to a link that provides a more detailed explanation.
