an update to my post below:

visualization.setSelection([]);          // doesn't work and crashes
visualization.setSelection([-1,-1])    // works

Another quirk is that the onmouseout event is only triggered when the
cursor moves out of the bar and the tooltip (in other words the
tooltip box is regarded as part of the bar area). This doesn't seem
correct behavior to me.
