Sorry, Don't know about that, all I know is that that option works for me,
I'd be happy to try understanding why it works for me and not for you.
I work with the google playground scatter chart:
http://code.google.com/apis/ajax/playground/#scatter_chart

try adding the following option in the options structure by changing line
18:
  width:600, height: 400,
to
  width:600, height: 400, colors:['green', 'orange'],

click the run code button.
When I do that, what I get is two data series with the green and orange
colors instead of the red and blue that were there originally

Does that not work for you, or maybe that was not what you intend to
achieve?
