I don't understand why formatters are associated with DataTables.
Formatters just control how data is seen, they should be associated
with a view element, such as a DataView or a Table. There are many
instances where Formatters could be much more useful if they were
associated with view elements, and many instances where code is
awkward or has reduced functionality becuase of their association with
DataTables.

This could be fixed by allowing them to be associated with DataViews
or Tables, while still being capable of being associated with
DataTables for backwards compatability. Such added functionality
would be a huge help.

Can someone in the know shed some light on this? If I don't hear a
convincing argument otherwise, I'm going to mark this as a bug or
enhancement.

thanks,
