So it does indeed appear to be a truncation performed by Fusion Tables itself.
I did a quick search and it turns out it was already discussed in the fusion tables forum: http://code.google.com/apis/fusiontables/groups/fusionTablesApiGroup.html?place=topic%2Ffusion-tables-users-group%2FX1YFeZXebQo%2Fdiscussion (the thread also contains some suggestions on how to work around the issue).
