Thank you!  Your comment below helped me recognize that the
visualization supports either date or datetime inputs.

However, now I see I've got a new problem:  I cannot figure out how
narrow the selection range to any value lower than a minute.  This
prevents me from viewing data with the detail I need.  Any thoughts or
suggestions?
