It appears that there is a bug in the CategoryFilter: when you have the 
"ui.allowTyping" option set to true and the dropdown list is too large to 
fit on the screen when dropped down, it draws the list with the top items 
at or above the the arrow, and registers a click on whichever element 
aligns with the drop down arrow (which is why you get something selected 
automatically in your project filter).  I filed a bug report on this: 
http://code.google.com/p/google-visualization-api-issues/issues/detail?id=1351

In the meantime, the way around the issue is to set the "ui.allowTyping" 
option to false.
