Has Google ever actually done it, permitting users to create xy charts where the points are connected? To forestall people who have never done scientific work, such charts are used in the sciences, particularly when the x coordinates are not evenly spaced and you want to give an accurate portrayal of the change in y vs x but not present a model prediction. Likewise, such charts are the basis of presenting spline-based predictions, which are not trivially reduced to a single equation.
