Chris, The 3D PieChart is in need of major reconstructive surgery. The underlying pseudo-3D techniques being used are fairly fragile, so, as you say, it's not really designed to do this kind of job. We hope to provide more general and correct 3D rendering capability in the future, but it will be a while before we can get to it.
