The repeated date ticks would appear to be a bug, but whether it is depends
on which version of the library you are using.   The recent versions should
reject tick alternatives that are not unique after formatting, or that are
too crowded, causing overlap.

You can also specify a list of tick values to use, with the 'ticks'
option.   If your data is static, this might be a good workaround for you.
