What data do you need to store there?  Could you store it in the wave
itself?  The wave gadget's tutorial describes this:

You'll need to provide more information for us to help with that one.  Is it
possible you're trying to perform an AJAX request to a domain other than the
one hosting the gadget?  Does your browser's error console give you any
details?

If persisting your state to the wave itself won't do, I think the AJAX
approach is the best approach here, and it doesn't matter where it's hosted
or what language you use, since gadgets are functionally just web pages.
