What User API are you referring to?  The only API I'm familiar with is
Google's appengine Accounts API, for authenticating Google accounts
generally (not in combination with Wave).  In this respect, your gadget is
just acting like any other web page that wants to authenticate the user, so
it's not tied to a particular service (Wave).  If your goal is just to
provide an authenticated key for your data, you could use any authentication
method you like (even OpenID).
