The underlying philosophical reason is because only the gwt incubator trunk
is supported code,  the idea of a "release branch" is not supported.

As of the last public release we did not bake in the svn version into the
jar, by the next public release (which should happen once the handlers are
moved into gwt 1.6), we will take and adapt Freeland's work on the trunk to
allow the gwt-incubator  jar itself to report the information below:
