General Comment: The sure way to test is to add this to the compilation command: -Dgwt.jjs.traceMethods="Widget.*" Ray is right that being explicit about the = 0 should not change the compilation result. However, be aware that that initialization probably does need to be emitted, and thus having a field there means you need a constructor. I wouldn't be sure, though, until I ran an actual traceMethods.
