I just completed a "Big Bang" upgrade from 1.4.62 to 1.5. Since I
have exactly one GWT project, I'm done with 1.4 for good. I expect to
be using 1.5 exclusively for the next year (if I'm employed that
long).
My upgrade:
1. technical conversion (replacing libs and shaking out errors I
introduced by intrusive customization) took 2 days
and the result was usable.
2. Converting to java 1.5 features (generics, foreach loops, auto
boxing, etc) and related refactorings took about a week
including testing along the way.
3. Converting JPA classes to be GWT compileable took another couple of
days (but I'm not sending them on the wire yet;
retiring my DTO's is yet to come).
Summary: In essence, it's not a bad conversion at all. There is lots
of language style improvement you can do, and it
can be fairly time consuming.
Also: I'm evaluating IntelliJ IDEA 8.0M1, which has some nice GWT
support, although it is still crabbing about annotations
that the GWT compiler is blithely ignoring. One nice feature is the
way navigation works among the synchronous and async
RPC interfaces.
