Where "downgrade to Java 1.4" just means "ask your IDE to use Java 1.4
source compatibility.
In Eclipse, in your project's properties, Java Compiler -> select
"1.4" in the "Compiler compliance level" dropdown.
If I were you though I'd upgrade to GWT 1.5.
