I do believe that the amount of info is online and is usually more
updated, but sometimes, you can't beat a book. So I've made it a
habit to pick up all the GWT books out there and read them. I'm also
going to throw out another great resource: the Voices That Matter
videos on You Tube. This was a GWT conference from last spring? and
the videos are terrific. I know I've tossed this out before, but here
are my opinions on these and few others:

1. GWT Solutions (aka the David Geary GWT book) - David is one of my
favorite guys out there, and his GWT book does a good job of showing
an overview with the same enthusiasm and "wow, this is cool!" kind of
attitude you'll get from him in person. Not an exhaustive tome, but a
good "show me the source code" type of book with many example mini-
projects. Watch this Voices that Matter video and you'll see why
David's the guy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x1WoMo5cyQ

2. GWT Applications (aka the Ryan Dewsbury book) - Similar to the
Geary book, this is a lot's of projects with source code kind of walk-
through GWT book. Where this is different is the projects themselves
are a little more full featured, and therefore the book is larger.
Great. book. See him in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeAXUDEfbjc

3. Ajax Security - Not a pure GWT book, but a great book by a
fantastic author and all around security genius. Watch his session
from Voices that Matter (look on YouTube, it's there...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKrvY42dw1A) and you'll be blown away
and run right out and buy this book. Excellent expose of how wide
open our web stuff is and steps you can do to lock things down.
Probably the only book like this out there.

4. GWT in Practice - My personal favorite book. Cooper and Collins
have done a great job of crossing over from a basic projects book or a
standard reference book and have authored an authoritative look at
GWT, tackling basic issues and features quickly and thoroughly. And
then they hit some tougher issues, that no one is hitting like data
binding and more advanced topics. I won't say it's not a beginner's
book, but it is certainly advanced. I've read it through three times
now and planning on a 4th soon. Would be perfect if it hit GWT 1.5,
but most of it is still dead on, even if it was written with 1.4 in
front of them.

You don't have Robert Hanson's authoritative GWT in Action
http://www.amazon.com/GWT-Action-Easy-Google-Toolkit/dp/1933988231/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c
on your list. If you're new to GWT and looking for the big reference
type of book, this is the best. One of the first really well done GWT
books (at least it was the first one I bought) and I still crack it
open.

On Amazon, there are at least 4 other books, the two "Yellow" Apress
books, one by Gupta, the other by a group lead by Smeets. The Smeets
book was written for GWT 1.5 and is a good introduction type of
book. They're fine books, just not my favorites. One other is by
Prabhakar Chaganti. Don't know what it is about this one, maybe I
wasn't in a good place, but it didn't work for me.

There is one more book that I'm going to have to admit I don't have
and haven't read, Pro Web 2.0 GWT Development by Jeff Dwyer
http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Application-Development-Experts-Voice/dp/1590599853/ref=pd_sim_b_5
. Looks very interesting, GWT 1.5, good Amazon reviews. Looks like
Santa's going to be getting this one for me!

Hope this helps.

Later,

Shaffer
