Greetings, You should definetely look at OpenSocial and the Shindig server implementation (http://incubator.apache.org/shindig/). Shindig directly offers REST and RPC APIs and gateways to outside CMS in Java and PHP.
On the frontend side, GWT offers almost all the « gadgetries » you could need and will pretty soon become an OpenSocial gadgets factory.
