You're asking an incredibly broad question that can only be answered - yes.
My best advice to you is to start working with GWT and build yourself a prototype that will test some of your desired features. If your development team is proficient in Java, then GWT will be fairly easy. You'll need to understand the dynamics of AJAX browser development, and some understanding servlet containers, again this is a browser based web application...you do need to know some of the basics there. If you or your team has done anything like Swing, then GWT will feel very familiar, but browser based. So again, you've asked a gigantic question that can really be answered by saying yes, build yourself a prototype.
