Thanks for the replies. After more than a week's worth of dev work attempting to do this, we eventually hit a roadblock that confirmed this was not possible. So for now we have decided to use Sass. Ideally, we'd have wanted to stick with the java dev toolchain, but it seems in this case the superiority of Sass compels us to break of from the discipline.
