I was using the FastTree widget, not the Tree widget unfortunately.

Try googling for "selection box", "highlight box", "focus box". All the
browsers useslightly different ways of removing that box. However, it is
such a pain to remove, that you might be better off figuring out a way to
use different css for your tree.
