In my experience it doesn't play any roles in what programming language an 
app is written but if it is huge, chaotic and no unit tests, it is very 
difficult to debug and to extend. I have a huge Java webapp and different 
devs working on it... Luckily Java is statically-typed and Java IDE is very 
good today, so it helps a lot...

So it won't help just to move to a new tech stack (Angular, TS, etc.) and 
still writing a huge app. Anything which is big enough will be hard to 
maintain.

About GWT skills, IMHO, if one could embrace HTML, DOM, WebAPIs from web 
browser and of course knows Java, she / he could work on GWT / Vue.js or 
whatever it is. For the details you need to try it anyway...
