Are you running the 32 or 64 bit version of ubuntu? The hosted browser runs only in 32 bit mode. I can't remember if your symptoms match what the hosted browser does in a 64bit environment or not. There is a simple workaround that requires downloading a 32 bit version of the jdk. Search the group for the details.
