GWT only implements a subset of Java: http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit-doc-1-5/wiki/RefJreEmulation
You should also think of it as client side web code (after all it gets compiled to JavaScript) as such you wouldn't normally be able to connect to a database directly - you'd go through the server which connects.
