Difficult to determine the issue without the CSS & some sample code, it's difficult to guess at the problem (might be a quirks issue).
On a side note, just to clarify that you explained yourself correctly, hosted mode browser is only IE on Windows (at least until GWT 2.0). Mozilla on Linux. Safari on OSX.
