Thank you both for the response. I tried them both, but with no success. The catch, if I understand your solutions, is that they involve translating the xml into html, but Firefox is refusing to render mathml unless the document type is xml or xhtml. If I don't understand your solution try speaking (typing?) louder and slower, that usually works.
I've caved and started investigating javascript to rework the linker template, but I'd still very much like to know how many other obstacles there are in converting the html file generated to an xhtml file.
