How about removing the foward slash before "searchService" i.e.
something like this instead:
String moduleRelativeURL = GWT.getModuleBaseURL()
+ "searchService";
Had similar problems sometimes, and that worked for me. According to
the docs, GWT.getModuleBaseURL() "if non-empty, is guaranteed to end
with a slash".
