alex.d, I am having same problem but with a csv file. I think it's that IE8 fails to recoginize the type (MIME type) of the file, so it reloads the page rather than ask the user to save as...
I asked same question in another post. please ignore. Surprisingly, i can server the file to IE8 in Vista just fine. But not for IE* in XP.
