just to follow up, I was able to override setTimeout and perform some tracking, record timer IDs and track those that expire, which left me with a single timer that always seems to be present upon shutdown. I am now running code that should close that timer as soon as the app knows it is terminating. only time will tell whether it will have an impact - I'm still waiting to see whether I can reproduce the crash.
and, by the way, I tried searching the GWT group for this thread and it returned nothing - the index seems broken.
