Just a wild idea:

What if GWT would compile a (compressed) jar file specifically for
Chrome and Chrome would be able to run java with direct access to it's
internal DOM objects?

For small apps this wouldn't make too much sense and is probably a bit
heavy on the download.

Large, long running ones (like Wave for example) could benefit heavily
from the increased performance.

Another way to look at it is that you get a java platform plus a
layout engine. You could even choose to develop solely for this
'JChrome' platform if it is an internally used application.
