You wrote earlier that "... I am believing that it gets an null response"
is xmlDoc1 indeed empty?
My guess is that there is a subtle syntax error in the MDL file; which
problem IE ignores. FF on the other hand doesn't let it slide.

Does xmlDoc1 lose its contents after this call?
