Thanks for the tip, but I'm not quite ready to switch to standards mode (required for TabLayoutPanel) as it will involve a rework of some of the other elements on my website.
I found that I am able to apply custom stylings if I first specifically remove the defaults : tp.getDeckPanel().removeStyleName("gwt-TabPanelBottom"); tp.getTabBar().removeStyleName("gwt-DecoratedTabBar "); Not sure why this is necessary, but seems to do the trick.
